Do you love beef? Look no further than American Aberdeen cattle! Those familiar with this lesser-known breed of cattle will tell you that these cattle are as full of character as they are delicious. Their beef is such an amazing treat to enjoy on your dinner plate!
American Aberdeen cattle were developed from a breed of Registered Angus that was established in 1929 at the Trangie Research Center in Australia, and they are now considered an excellent breed for new farmers. These cattle have survived decades of breeding with regard to frame size, allowing for smaller newborn calves and making them great mothers. It's easy to see why this breed has become such an exciting option for small ranchers getting started in the beef industry.
This information made us decide that the Aberdeen breed was the one for us. We don't have a lot of pasture land and have to supplement feed for most of the year. We feed our cattle on alfalfa and oat hay and grain finish them in the last 90 days. We found they have excellent taste, texture, and tenderness and have a great beef yield per hundred pounds of body weight, which translates to very high yielding, high quality, high value beef carcasses. What we love the most about these cattle is their smaller size and easygoing nature.
Here at the ranch, we run primarily a steer operation, meaning we raise yearlings to mature butcher weight at approximately 18-22 months. We usually get our yearlings around April and butcher in January.
We have three resident females. We especially have a soft spot for our sweet Jenny who was born the year we started our little herd in the spring of 2021. Jenny comes running to us when we call her name, loves to be scratched, and gets a lot of attention. Jenny now is a bred heifer due to have her first calf in July of this year. We also have two additional cows, Aurora and Playing Games who are also due to calve this July/August.
Contact us if you are interested in reserving beef. We are currently taking deposits for butcher dates in January 2024.
